I chose this course due to my interest in learning about the Chicano culture. Back in my hometown, I was introduced to the Chicano culture early in my life through friendships and novels. Interestingly enough, one of the novels in this course was a novel I read in the eighth grade. As I read through each novel, I would discuss the contents in class with my group, finding an understanding between our cultures. These discussions proved useful in our papers and exams. In our final exam, we were to analyze specific quotes from each novel that we had previously read and recognize their significance to their novel (exam seen below). The exam was our reflection of what we had learned from the books and what we knew now of Chicano culture. If there is an opportunity, I would further my learning experience by reading another novel by a Chicano author or by attending one of their speeches. I feel that if I can relate on a personal level, I could expand my understanding of different cultures.
