JAPN 312: Japanese for the Professions
Although I had studied Japanese in high school, I felt as if I was at a disadvantage - not because of my lack of knowledge but because I was not used to speaking Japanese often. This was mostly because I had developed a fear of messing up when speaking Japanese to a native Japanese speaker. The courses I have taken not only strengthened my grammar foundation but also my confidence in speaking aloud to a native Japanese speaker.
In JAPN 300, we learned various grammar points and kanji, testing our retention of the acquired knowledge through quizzes, exams and presentations. For example, in my final presentation for the course, we were tasked with writing a survival guide for tourists in specific areas in Japan. I wrote about Shinjuku in particular because it was an area in Tokyo that I had a deep interest in since I was in high school. Through this presentation, I used grammar points that I still use today such as the "even though~still" grammar point to discuss about specific areas in Shinjuku that I wanted to explore if I ever got the chance - which I did when I visited Tokyo during my study abroad.
In JAPN 302, we covered Japanese history in Japanese throughout each period. We also discussed our weekly content questions to further our understanding of Japan's history. For my final project, I did an analysis on both Japan and America's national anthems' history and its problems, finding that both were interesting and significant to their respective countries.
In JAPN 312, we learned many grammar points that would be useful in the Japanese business worlds. We also had to record a business skit in groups: writing scripts, supplying our own props and acting out our parts. While the course was challenging, it was extremely beneficial. Not only does it fulfill MLO1 but it also helped prepare me for my future studies. The role play exercises helped with getting comfortable with speaking business Japanese and learning how to fill out Japanese resume forms became useful as I look towards finding a job in Japan.
